Dr. Robert Turcotte

Dr Turcotte trained in orthopaedic surgery at University de Montréal. He built up his interest in musculoskeletal oncology initially at Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital where he returned following fellowships at Cochin hospital in Paris and at the Mayo Clinic. He joined the Montreal General Hospital and McGill in 1994 as part-time. From 2004 to 2016 he chaired the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the McGill University and the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). He is the medical director of the only provincial designated supraregional sarcoma program and an affiliated member of the MUHC Department of Oncology. His tumor works serve both children and adults. He is Professor of Surgery at McGill and Research chair of Orthopaedics at King Khalid University hospital and King Saud University College of medicine in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is also a visiting consultant in Kuwait and Qatar. Dr Turcotte has been involved at different levels within the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) and the Quebec Orthopaedic Association (QOA), which he served as president from 2014-2018. He sits on the executive of the sarcoma branch of the National Cancer Trial Group of Canada and he was the spoke person for oncology within the COA for many years. He’s currently chair the outcome section of the Canadian Orthopaedic Oncology Society (CanOOS) and sit on the steering committee of the recently created Canadian Sarcoma Clinical and Research Collaboration (CanSarCC). Additionally he is a member of many national and international musculoskeletal oncology societies and sits on different committees. Dr Turcotte has been involved in the organization of many national and international meetings. His activities have led to many lectures, publications and professorships. He is an ad hoc reviewer for many journals and has served on editorial boards of orthopaedic journals. He also led or joined many national and international collaborative efforts on clinical research. His interest in bone banking and tissue transplantation lead him to sit on the Quebec Biovigilance committee and the Canadian Council for Donation and Transplantation (CCDT). He also participated to the establishment of a national surveillance system on adverse events following tissue transplantation with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). His work has been recognized through many awards including, the COA award of merit and the Lloyd McLean award which have given him the opportunity to do a scholarship at Instituto Orthopedico Rizzoli in Bologna. He was admitted as Member of Honor by the French Orthopedic Society (SoFCOT) in 2016. He’s a founding member of the most successful fundraising wine event in Canada: Montreal Wine Passion. In December 2017 Dr Natalie Habra, chair of the amputee program and physiatrist and Dr Turcotte initiated the first osseointegration clinic for amputees in Canada at the Lindsay-Gingras Montreal Rehabilitation Institute. Since 2018 Dr. Turcotte is the only surgeon in Canada to perform osseointegration procedures. Dr Turcotte and Habra representation toward osseointegration led the Quebec government to include osseointegration into its 2019 Health budget thus becoming the first publicly funded osseointegration program in North America.
