Dr. Joel Werier
Steering Committee Orthopaedic Surgery OHRI Ottawa

Dr. Werier is an orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty practice in both adult and pediatric musculoskeletal oncology, practicing at The Ottawa Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario since 2002. He is known both nationally and internationally as an active member of the global orthopaedic oncology community. Since 2002, he has led and developed a strong multidisciplinary sarcoma program at The Ottawa Hospital. He has been involved extensively with Cancer Care Ontario with the consolidation of Sarcoma Services across Ontario and the submission of the Ottawa Hospital Sarcoma Services Plan. He has served on Cancer Care Ontario’s Sarcoma steering committee, and is currently the Co-Chair of Cancer Care Ontario’s Program of Evidence Base Care for Sarcoma guidelines. This committee develops, publishes, and reviews all sarcoma guidelines and he is the current lead author on the active guideline under development 11-4, Management of ECARE Sarcoma’s. He has served as the program director of the uOttawa Orthopaedic Residency program from 2008-2016 leading the residency program through 2 very successful Royal College Accreditation Cycles. He has been involved with the development of national objectives of training for orthopaedic oncology and served a term as vice chair of our Royal college specialty committee. He continues to contribute to educational activities at both the postgraduate and undergraduate levels, as well as the national level. He has been co-chairman of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association Basic Science Course and remain on the executive board. In research he has a long history of collaborative clinical research in orthopaedic oncology and long-standing relationships with basic science labs at the OHRI. As for recent innovations in clinical care, He has been working closely with the developers of a local startup company to help develop and evaluate virtual reality as a surgical planning and communication tool. His experience with this state-of-the-art technology has been presented at several international conferences with significant interest.
