I am a first-year medical student at the University of Toronto, and I first joined CanSaRCC in the summer after my second year of the Life Sciences program at U of T. During this time, I was trained in entering data into the national sarcoma database to help improve understanding of treatment outcomes and patient impact across Canada. Reading through patient charts and working within the framework of the data dictionary strengthened my critical thinking skills, as I learned to interpret clinical details with precision and connect them to foundational concepts from my physiology, genetics, and biology courses. This experience also fostered my professional development and personal growth, as I applied academic knowledge in real-world clinical research settings.
In my final year, I completed my BIO400 internship with CanSaRCC, where I became involved in patient screening, obtaining consents, and contributing to various ongoing projects. I later completed my Master of Global Health practicum with CanSaRCC, leading my own research project, helping to train new students, and attending the Canadian International Sarcoma Symposium.
Being part of CanSaRCC has been both professionally enriching and personally meaningful, and I am excited to continue contributing to its important work of advancing sarcoma research and improving patient care.
