Reid Pernica - Ewing Sarcoma

Reid Pernica (Feb 26, 1988 - Nov 25, 2007)

Reid was diagnosed with metastatic Ewing sarcoma in 2005 at 17 years old. Given that Ewing sarcoma is an aggressive cancer he endured many months of chemotherapy cycles, multiple radiation and stem cell therapy, surgery was not an option.
Despite the pain that came with the struggle to survive cancer, Reid did not give up. He dreamt of joining the Air Force and worked towards that dream continuing treatment as he earned his Pilot’s licence and in 2006 made his first solo flight while working as ground crew at Buttonville Airport, just north of Toronto. What lay behind Reid's love and need for flight is multifaceted. Reid found flying relaxing and thrilling, a thrill derived from living on the edge of the unexpected. Most importantly, he was in complete control. Reid was never fond of boundaries and flying set him free.

Reid often felt frustrated, knowing that there was little knowledge and little progress in the way of research into Ewing sarcoma. He felt strongly about the need to address this life-threatening issue. Reid would talk with his oncologists about starting a foundation whose main goal would be to raise funds specifically for Ewing sarcoma research, early detection and awareness, he especially knew how important that would be.
Reid was most grateful to Dr. Abha Gupta and Dr. David Malkin for their dedication and care.
Sadly, in November 2007 at 19 years old, Reid passed away. During his battle with cancer, Reid never allowed this terrible disease to break his wonderful spirit.

From Reid’s inspirational life and brilliant spirit, in 2008 the Pernica Family established the Ewings Cancer Foundation of Canada (ECFC) with an important mission of addressing research and advocacy for Ewing sarcoma, significantly raising the profile of this cancer.

Reid would be proud to know that he was instrumental in launching this important mission, and that finally those suffering from Ewing sarcoma will benefit from research and awareness that is now underway where patients, parents, and health care advocates can find, significant and reliable Ewing sarcoma information.

In 2018, the ECFC transitioned to SickKids Foundation where the work continues. www.ewingscancer.ca.
